POLICY UPDATE:
Nursing students and Med students:
PLEASE GET CONFIRMATION FROM A GROUP MODERATOR BEFORE
ATTENDING ONE OF OUR MEETINGS. THANK YOU!
WHAT TO EXPECT
We are currently a small group and are growing. We will be
focusing on having some fun, providing some comic relief, playing
some games -- as well as creating a space where people who suffer
bipolar or depression can come, visit with each other, learn that
they are not alone, not be judged, and just have a chance to be
yourself in a group of people who know what you are going through.
We don't perform structured therapy per se and, by policy,
we don't try to prescribe medications and treatments. We are just
trying to create a safe atmosphere where people can talk about
things they can't talk about at work, school, or even at home.
There are no prerequisites to attend. We only ask that
you respect other attendees and their privacy and that YOU GIVE
THIS A CHANCE! We have recently gone through personel
changes and are still finding our stride. We are open to
those who want to volunteer to help out and we encourage you
to stop by if you are suffering from the powerful grip of
bipolar or depression.
We can't and don't promise healing or any magic solutions. We
just know that being with people in this context is always
better than going it alone.
We ask that you try to
be open when you come, open to contributing just by being
yourself and being open and giving this support group a chance
as we continue to grow and work on our own direction.
We look forward to seeing YOU.
Come visit us anytime. Our meetings are informal and supportive and open to anyone who suffers
from bipolor or depression. Family members are also welcomed.
We average about 10 people each meeting. We focus more on wellness and recovery
than on illness and symptoms.
We have never known anyone to maintain recovery by just popping some pills.
Recovery also involves learning new coping and relaxation skills, changing attitudes,
beliefs and expectations. No need to call first, just come by and visit with us.
Right now our group is very small... but growing.)
A copy of our "Yuck and Yeah" list of area healthcare professionals can be obtained by
attending an Overland Park/Southside Support Group meeting.
Be aware that some individuals are on both lists. Finding a professional who matches your individual
needs is a very personal issue. Remember, emotions are signals, not commands. Now is not
forever. Gratitude is a powerful healing force.
