POLICY UPDATE: Nursing students and Med students: PLEASE GET CONFIRMATION FROM A GROUP MODERATOR BEFOREATTENDING ONE OF OUR MEETINGS. THANK YOU!
WHAT TO EXPECT We are currently a small group and are growing. We are creating a space where people who sufferbipolar or depression can come, visit with each other, learn thatthey are not alone, not be judged, and just have a chance to beyourself in a group of people who know what you are going through. We don't perform structured therapy per se and, by policy,we don't try to prescribe medications and treatments. We are justtrying to create a safe atmosphere where people can talk aboutthings they can't talk about at work, school, or even at home.
There are no prerequisites to attend. We only ask thatyou respect other attendees and their privacy and that YOU GIVETHIS A CHANCE! We have recently gone through personel changes and are still finding our stride. We are open to those who want to volunteer to help out and we encourage youto stop by if you are suffering from the powerful grip ofbipolar or depression.
We can't and don't promise healing or any magic solutions. Wejust know that being with people in this context is alwaysbetter than going it alone.
We ask that you try to be open when you come, open to contributing just by beingyourself and being open and giving this support group a chanceas we continue to grow and work on our own direction.
We look forward to seeing YOU.
Come visit us anytime. Our meetings are informal and supportive and open to anyone who suffersfrom bipolor or depression. Family members are also welcomed. We average about 10 people each meeting. We focus more on wellness and recovery than on illness and symptoms. We have never known anyone to maintain recovery by just popping some pills. Recovery also involves learning new coping and relaxation skills, changing attitudes, beliefs and expectations. No need to call first, just come by and visit with us.Right now our group is very small... but growing.)
A copy of our "Yuck and Yeah" list of area healthcare professionals can be obtained by attending an Overland Park/Southside Support Group meeting. Be aware that some individuals are on both lists. Finding a professional who matches your individual needs is a very personal issue. Remember, emotions are signals, not commands. Now is not forever. Gratitude is a powerful healing force. Don't give up!
